About Delete Blank Pages
Blank pages usually arrive in pairs with double-sided scanning, or when a section break in the source file leaves an empty page behind. Deleting them by page number is risky once the document has been edited. This tool inspects each page for actual content, removes only the pages that are empty, and returns a fresh PDF with the remaining pages in order.
The Duplex Artefact
Print a document double-sided on a printer that inserts a separator between sheets, or feed a stack of single-sided pages through a duplex scanner, and you will end up with blank pages interleaved between the content. The resulting PDF looks fine page by page, but every other sheet is empty, the file is twice as large as it needs to be, and anyone printing it wastes half a ream of paper. This is one of the most common scanning artefacts, and one of the easiest to fix automatically.
The problem with manual removal is that blank pages are not always where you expect them. A page that appears blank at a glance might contain a watermark, a header line, or a faint stamp that someone deliberately placed there. Guessing which pages to delete based on a quick scroll-through risks removing something that was meant to stay. Automated detection avoids that by inspecting the actual content of each page before deciding whether it qualifies as blank.
How Blank Gets Detected
The tool examines each page for text objects and drawn content. A page that contains neither (no characters, no vector graphics, no embedded images with visible content) is classified as blank and queued for removal. A page that contains a scanned image of a form, even if the form is mostly empty white space, is not blank; it has meaningful drawn content and stays in the document.
This distinction matters because the most common false positive in blank-page detection is a page that looks empty but actually contains a scanned image of an empty form, a faint header, or a page number in the corner. The detection logic used here is conservative: it removes only pages with no content objects at all, leaving anything questionable in place. If a page you expected to be removed survives, it almost certainly contains something (even something faint) that the tool considers meaningful.
Reports How Many Were Removed
After the scan completes, the tool tells you how many pages it removed. That number is worth checking. If you scanned a forty-page document and expected roughly twenty blank pages between the duplexed sheets, and the tool removed eighteen, you can be reasonably confident the detection worked correctly. If it removed only two, something unusual is going on with the source file, perhaps the blank pages contain a faint background pattern that registers as drawn content.
The cleaned document downloads with the remaining pages in their original order, renumbered without gaps. Nothing else about the file changes: the pages that were kept are identical to the originals, and the source document is not modified. You can run the tool again on the same input if you want to experiment with a different detection threshold, or use the result as-is and move on.
Real cases
Six real-world scenarios where people rely on Delete Blank Pages.
Hospital Cures Scanned Chart Artefacts
A medical records clerk scanned a 200-page patient chart duplex-style, and the feeder produced a blank back side after nearly every sheet. The resulting PDF had over ninety empty pages interleaved with the actual records, making it unusable for the EHR attachment limit. Running delete-blank-pages stripped every empty sheet in one pass and renumbered the chart cleanly for upload.
Solicitor Cleans Court Filing Bundle
A solicitor preparing a court bundle had printed exhibits double-sided on a printer that inserted separator sheets. When the bundle was scanned back to PDF, blank pages from the separators and back-sides appeared throughout. The filing portal rejected the oversized document; deleting the blank pages brought it under the size cap without touching any exhibit content.
Accountant Tidies Invoice Scan Batch
An accounts payable clerk scanned a stack of supplier invoices, but the document feeder pulled blank pages from the tray between batches. The scan PDF had random blank pages that confused the OCR queue downstream. Deleting them produced a tidy invoice set that matched the paper stack exactly, so the three-way match against purchase orders ran without mismatch errors.
Librarian Preps Digitized Manuscript
A special-collections librarian digitized a bound manuscript on a planetary scanner that captured blank verso pages between folios. The library needed a clean access copy for the digital repository, but repository guidelines reject files with empty pages. Removing the blank versos left only the inked folios, halving the download size for remote researchers.
Logistics Clerk Fixes Proof-of-Delivery Forms
A logistics clerk scanned signed proof-of-delivery forms where drivers had left the second page of each two-page form blank. The combined PDF stretched past the fleet portal’s page limit for a single claim submission. Deleting the unused second pages produced a compact claim file that uploaded cleanly and matched the count of signed deliveries.
Graduate Student Prunes Survey Printouts
A graduate student printed survey consent forms on both sides of the paper, then scanned the stack to share with her thesis committee. Roughly half the PDF pages were blank backs, which made navigation miserable in the committee’s review software. Cleaning out the blanks produced a readable packet where every page carried consent text.
Frequently asked questions
Will it delete a page that only contains an image of text?
No. A page is considered blank only when it has no text and no meaningful drawn content.
How does it decide a page is blank?
It looks for text objects and visible drawing content. A page with neither is treated as blank; anything faint but real stays in the file.
Can I undo the deletion?
The original file is untouched, so you can run the tool again or go back to the source if too much was removed.
Does it delete a page that only has a page number?
No. A page number is text, so the page counts as having content and is kept.
Will it remove a blank page in the middle of a scan?
Yes, if the page truly has no content. A scanner shadow or a dust speck can register as drawn content and keep the page.
Is there a limit on document length?
Only memory. A few hundred pages is routine; a thousand-page scan is better handled on a desktop.
