About EPUB to PDF
An EPUB reflows to fit any screen, which is great for reading and bad for printing. Converting to PDF fixes the layout onto pages, so the book can be printed, annotated or shared as a single document. Chapter structure and formatting carry over where the format allows.
Reflowable Books Meet Fixed Pages
EPUB is a reflowable format on purpose: the same file renders differently on a phone, a tablet and an e-ink reader, because the text rewraps to whatever screen is available. That is a feature for reading, but it is a liability for everything else. You cannot hand a reflowable file to a printer, attach it to an email that the recipient must open in a known layout, or archive a "version" of a book that might reflow differently next year. Converting to PDF freezes the pages: the same line breaks, the same pagination, the same image placement on every device that opens the file. For a research paper, an instruction manual, a course reader or any EPUB that has to circulate as a document rather than as a reading experience, that fixed layout is the whole point.
Reading Order and Chapter Flow
An EPUB's internal structure is a spine: an ordered list of XHTML content documents that the reader walks through from cover to last page. This converter follows that spine exactly, rendering each chapter in sequence onto fixed A5 book pages and carrying any embedded images along with the text. What you get is one continuous book flow rather than a collection of unrelated sections, chapter headings appear where the EPUB placed them, paragraphs keep their relative order, and images stay attached to the chapter that referenced them. Interactive PDF bookmarks for the table of contents are not generated, so if a reader needs jump-to-chapter navigation, the printed page numbers or an external table of contents are the reliable way to get there.
Printable Books and Manuals
EPUB is a poor format for print: printers do not accept it, page counts are unknown until the text is laid out, and the "pages" a reader sees on screen are artefacts of the screen size rather than real pages. A PDF produced from an EPUB solves all three: the page size is fixed (A5 book pages by default, which matches typical trade paperback proportions), the page count is deterministic, and the file can be sent to any print shop or printed at home without reflow surprises. Internal manuals, course packs, public-domain classics and self-published drafts all benefit from this route, the author writes once in EPUB for on-screen reading, and exports a PDF whenever a physical copy or a universally readable archive is needed. DRM-protected files cannot be converted, since the encryption prevents the content from being read in the first place.
Real cases
Six real-world scenarios where people rely on EPUB to PDF.
A Small Press Sending Advance Review Copies
A children's-book publisher was emailing advance reader copies to reviewers three months before release, but every reviewer read on a different device and complained about inconsistent page breaks in the EPUB. The editor converted each draft to A5 PDF once and attached that file instead, every reviewer now sees the same spreads, and magazine pull-quotes can cite exact page numbers.
A Librarian Building a Shared Course Reader
A university librarian maintained a folder of EPUB course packs for a literature seminar. Students on library laptops, tablets and personal phones all saw different pagination, which made in-class discussion of "page 47" impossible. The librarian generated A5 PDFs from each EPUB, and discussion questions finally line up across the room.
An Editor Marking Up a Manuscript Draft
A freelance editor received a self-published novel as EPUB and needed to return annotated page-by-page comments. Working in a PDF let her jump to the same pages the author would print, add margin notes, and ship one marked-up file back. Editing in the reflowable original would have lost every reference to page position.
A Self-Published Author Ordering a Print Proof
An independent author finished a novella in EPUB and wanted a single paperback proof from a short-run printer. The print shop required a fixed-layout file with a known page count, which EPUB cannot provide. Converting to A5 PDF gave the printer exactly what it needed, and the proof arrived matching the on-screen reading order.
A Lecturer Archiving a Public-Domain Course Text
An English lecturer taught from a public-domain classic that existed online only as a collection of EPUBs. For long-term course archives she needed a fixed snapshot that would not reflow if a reader updated. The PDF conversion froze the text into stable A5 pages now stored in the departmental repository.
A Translator Checking Layout of an Illustrated Guide
A translator working on a Japanese-to-English travel guide received the draft as EPUB with embedded maps and captions. To verify caption placement against the fixed pages of the original print edition, she converted the EPUB to A5 PDF and compared side by side. The reflowable version alone could not show her whether captions stayed glued to their maps.
Frequently asked questions
Does it keep the table of contents?
Chapters follow the EPUB spine in order, one continuous book flow, interactive PDF bookmarks are not added.
Will it handle DRM-protected books?
No. Only unencrypted EPUB files can be converted.
Will the table of contents survive?
Yes, chapter headings become PDF bookmarks where the EPUB provides them. A book with a broken navigation file may lose the outline.
Can it open DRM-protected books?
No. DRM exists to prevent this kind of conversion, so the tool only handles DRM-free EPUB files.
What page size does it use?
A5 by default, which suits a book-like layout. Choose A4 when the PDF will be printed alongside other documents.
Are images kept?
Yes, embedded images are carried into the PDF. Their resolution depends on the source, so a low-resolution cover stays low-resolution.
Why does the text reflow differently?
EPUB has no fixed pages, so the converter decides where pages break. A PDF is fixed, and the same book may run to a different page count.
