About PDF to Text
When you need the words and not the page, PDF to text is the fastest route. It pulls the text layer out of the document and returns it as plain text, with line breaks preserved. Scanned PDFs need OCR first; this tool reads the text that is already there.
Why Plain Text Still Wins
Plain text remains the most durable exchange format in computing. It opens on any device, survives every software migration, and can be fed into search indexes, translation tools, language models and archival systems without special software. When a PDF holds a report, contract or article that someone else needs to quote, search or reformat, the fastest path is almost always a .txt file. Selecting text page by page inside a viewer loses the page order and silently drops ligatures, em-dashes and footnotes; a direct extractor walks the document once and hands back every string in reading order.
Scanned PDFs Are Different
A PDF made from a scanner or a camera is a stack of images bound together, there is no text layer for an extractor to read. This is the single most common surprise people hit: they upload a 40-page scanned contract, get a blank .txt file, and assume the tool is broken. Optical Character Recognition is the fix, and it belongs in a separate pass. Run the file through OCR first to produce a searchable PDF, then extract from that version. The two-step flow (OCR, then extract) produces text that is far more accurate than either step alone, because the recognition engine sees the full page context before the text is flattened into a line stream.
From Extraction to Search
Once text is out of the PDF, the downstream uses compound quickly. Indexing a folder of annual reports for full-text search, feeding an archive into a translation pipeline, or pasting a chapter into a notes app all become trivial with a clean .txt file. For teams that keep minutes, policies or research papers in PDF form, a nightly batch extraction into a central index can turn a static library into a queryable knowledge base. The extractor here runs entirely in the browser, so sensitive material never leaves the machine, a meaningful advantage when the PDFs in question are board minutes, medical summaries or legal drafts.
Real cases
Six real-world scenarios where people rely on PDF to Text.
An Attorney Searches a Case File
A family-law attorney inherited a 90-page PDF bundle of depositions from opposing counsel and needed to find every mention of a single bank account. Extracting the text to a .txt file let them use the desktop search they already trusted instead of scrolling through a PDF viewer page by page.
An Author Quotes a Printed Memoir
A writer was quoting a friend's memoir in a new essay and the publisher's PDF would not let them copy more than a paragraph at a time. Extracting the whole book to text in one pass let them pull the exact passages they needed without retyping or screenshotting.
A Researcher Feeds Papers into a Translator
A graduate student needed three German-language journal articles translated for a literature review. Extracting the text first meant they could paste clean source text into their translation tool rather than wrestling with copy-paste from a PDF viewer that kept inserting hard line breaks mid-sentence.
A Translator Prepares a Glossary
A freelance translator received a 120-page technical manual as a PDF and had to build a terminology glossary before starting. The plain-text export loaded into a spreadsheet in seconds, letting them scan for repeated terms without opening the original document again.
A Student Builds a Study Bank
A law student turned four years of lecture-note PDFs into text files so they could load them into an Anki deck. What used to take a weekend of manual copying was done in an afternoon, and the deck searched correctly because ligatures and footnotes came through intact.
An Archivist Indexes a Donated Collection
A small local-history society received a donor's scanned-and-OCR'd letters as searchable PDFs. Extracting the text of every letter into one folder created a single index the volunteers could search when researchers called asking about a surname or a street name.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my scanned PDF returning no text?
Scans are images, not text. Use the OCR tool on that file first, then extract the text from the searchable PDF it produces.
Will the layout and columns be kept?
The output is a reading-order text file, so complex multi-column pages are flattened into a single sensible flow.
Does it keep paragraph breaks?
It keeps the line breaks as they appear on the page. Paragraphs may need joining if the PDF stores every line separately, which is common in older files.
Can I extract text from a password-protected PDF?
Unlock it first. The text layer is encrypted with the rest of the file, so the extractor cannot read it until the password is removed.
What encoding is the .txt file?
UTF-8, which handles English, Arabic, accented Latin and most other scripts without garbling.
Are images and tables included?
No. The output is text only. Tables lose their columns and images disappear, so use PDF to Word or PDF to Excel when structure matters.
Can I copy a passage without downloading?
Yes. The preview is selectable, so a short quotation can be copied straight out. For a whole document, the .txt download is faster.
